Durga Ma has simplified a previously mysterious and misunderstood subject and made it possible for anyone to practice meditation and get results. Meditating Naturally is a unique synthesis which is the result of Durga Ma's own personal experience. For many years, she has tested tradition and non-tradition, written teachings and oral teachings, in her own lab, her meditation, and now she shares it with us.

The ideas contained in this book are for you to consider. It is not necessary to agree with them. Test them. To try them out for yourself, pretend that they are true and see what happens. Experiment with them so that you can settle it for yourself.

Introversion of the Senses

"Pratyahara"

When the sense faculties operate independently from the sense organs in meditation it is called pratyahara. Pratyahara is also known as the withdrawal of the senses from the objects of sense.

In meditation, first the environment begins to recede, and then the ability to sense separates from the organs of sense. When the senses are no longer dependent on the sense organs in order to perceive, pratyahara is achieved and you can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel (touch) without the sense organs.

Pratyahara is the basis of the magical quality of meditation. Once pratyahara begins, it is possible to achieve a true meditative state.
